After running some tests, applique panels perform very strangely.
When any HEAT shell was fired directly at them, including a fairly low powered one, all of the 5x 4m applique panels were destroyed instantly, including the blocks behind them. The listed explosion damage was below 200 so the shell shouldn't have destroyed more than one piece of applique (500HP) no matter what.
When 2 layers of metal followed immediately by a layer of applique panels were shot with extremely overkill HEAT shells, nothing happened. No real damage was done to any of the blocks, including the applique panels and the soft blocks behind them.
When 2 layers of metal followed by an air gap and then a layer of applique panels were shot with extremely overkill HEAT shells, the applique panels were destroyed along with the soft blocks behind them.
When 2 layers of metal followed immediately by a layer of applique panels were hit by an extremely overkill HESH shell, the fragments spawned behind the applique panels. When an air gap was left between the metal and the applique, the fragments spawned behind the metal, as expected.
When applique panels were sandwiched between layers of metal were hit by an extremely overkill HESH shell, the fragments still spawned all the way behind the all of the armour.
Is it intended for applique panels to 100% absorb HEAT shells going through them with no damage but not HESH? Is it intended for a block with a partial model to act as a full block? If so, why do they not work when HEAT hits them directly? Is that also intended?
I'm somewhat perplexed because presumably, although it does not grant stacking bonuses, it should be possible to negate HEAT completely and weaken HESH by having applique sandwiched between your armour and a layer of wood (since the HESH goes through the applique, though presumably loses a fair bit of penetration metric due to the applique's high AC.) which makes for rather effective armour, but punishes HEAT much more than HESH even though HESH is arguably stronger.
In terms of consistency, I also find it a little weird that surface applique seems to do nothing against HEAT whereas internal applique completely negates it seemingly for free (no apparent damage).
