This issue does not seem to affect pre 2.4 (autogenerated) AIs as much, although a ship of mine well below its broadside minimum range only turned to about 135 degrees away from its target to establish range instead of going straight away from it.
I have tried different combinations of AIs with the attached vehicle and while it does manoeuvre at the beginning of a fight, it seems to get progressively more confused and eventually stops generating waypoints (path view) entirely. While the yawing is set up in non-conventional ways, the fact that it manages to turn at first tells me there's something weird going on with the AI. This vehicle has worked better in different iterations of 2.4, although it always did act a little weird with its pathing.
None of the combinations I have tried, including Naval + Naval manoeuvre seem to result in the expected behaviour.
I have a screenshot of it going away from a target from its maximum broadside range, on top of having a waypoint to the side and it not manoeuvering towards it (as hinted by the jet trails being straight).
